About This Tool

What is Flatten PDF?

PDF flattening converts all interactive elements - text field inputs, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown selections, freehand annotations, highlights, and clickable hyperlinks - into static, painted content on the page. The result is a clean PDF with no interactive layers that looks identical in every viewer and cannot be edited, filled in, or tampered with.

Our free PDF Flattener offers two distinct modes. Standard Flatten uses pdf-lib to merge form data and annotations directly into page content streams, preserving full text quality and original resolution. Image Flatten (rasterize mode) converts every page to a JPEG image using PDF.js and re-embeds it - making text uncopyable and providing the highest level of tamper-proofing for sensitive documents. For rasterize mode, choose from four output DPI levels (75, 100, 150, 220) to balance file size against print quality.

The tool supports batch processing - upload multiple PDFs at once, review them in the file queue, then flatten all in a single click. Single files download as .pdf; multiple files are packaged into a .zip automatically. Each file in the queue shows individual progress status so you always know what's happening.

Within Standard mode you have granular control: independently toggle flattening of form fields, annotations, and hyperlink removal. Password-protected PDFs are supported - the tool will prompt for the password on the fly if needed.

Since all processing runs entirely in your browser, documents containing sensitive personal, financial, or legal information are never transmitted to any server. Your files stay on your device from start to finish.

Features

Powerful Features

Everything you need in one amazing tool

Batch Processing

Upload and flatten multiple PDFs at once. Each file shows its own progress status and all results download together as a ZIP.

Standard Flatten

Merges form fields, annotations, and hyperlinks into static page content using pdf-lib. Full quality preserved - no rasterization.

Image / Rasterize Mode

Converts every page to a JPEG image via PDF.js. Text cannot be copied or extracted - ideal for maximum tamper-proofing.

Custom DPI (75-220)

In Image mode, choose 75 dpi (smallest), 100 dpi (balanced), 150 dpi (sharing), or 220 dpi (print quality).

Remove Hyperlinks

Strips all clickable URL and internal navigation links from the document independently of other flatten options.

Private & Browser-Based

All flattening runs locally in your browser with pdf-lib and PDF.js. No files are ever uploaded to a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Flatten PDF

Standard flatten uses pdf-lib to merge interactive elements into page content streams - text remains selectable and quality is unchanged. Image mode converts every page to a JPEG via PDF.js, making text uncopyable. Use Image mode for maximum tamper-proofing; use Standard for quality-preserving archival.

Yes. Drop multiple PDF files onto the upload zone or use the "Add more" button to build a queue. All files are processed sequentially and - when there are multiple files - downloaded together as a single ZIP archive.

Both achieve a similar result, but flattening is more precise: it renders interactive elements into the exact same content layer without affecting page size, resolution, fonts, or other document properties.

No. Flattening is a permanent, one-way operation. The interactive fields become static content. Always keep a copy of your original before flattening.

Standard mode may slightly increase file size as field content is drawn into page content streams. Image mode will generally increase file size more, depending on the DPI chosen. Use our Compress PDF tool afterwards if needed.

Yes, in Standard mode. If a PDF is password-protected, the tool will prompt you to enter the password before processing. Note: password-protected PDFs cannot be flattened in Image mode - use Standard mode or unlock the PDF first.

No. All flattening is done locally in your browser using pdf-lib and PDF.js. Nothing is ever transmitted to any server.
